about

The Nil Cassette Archive Volume One | Box-less Boxset | Premium Palladium Edition is the first in a series of compilations of 4-track recordings by American folk artists, Nil. The music inside this non-box defies, and in some cases, defiles, concepts of genre, fashion and sensibility. These are the Nil Musics.

Nil commenced music production early in 1998 and proceeded to record hundreds of cassettes of original music in basements and bedrooms, shacks and tents throughout the Franklin & Hampshire County Tri-Lettuce Belt region of western Massachusetts. Five years later the creative flame was extinguished when an exploding furnace obliterated two members of the band during a recording session. Fortunately, the tapes survived. The oeuvre Nil left behind spans a wide spectrum--from turgid ass plunger to sublime hook-driven accessibility--encapsulating the experimental spirit which fountain-spurt during the 4-track recording revolution of the late 20th-century.

To whom will the tracks on The Nil Cassette Archive Volume One | Box-less Boxset | Premium Palladium Edition appeal? Art students, weirdos & dope fiends for the most part, but also anyone with an interest in music made without the coercive and corrosive influence of record labels, adoring fans, large royalty proceeds, or state & local laws. For the people who wonder whatever happened to music--real, honest-to-goodness, give-no-fucks music--The Nil Cassette Archive Volume One | Box-less Boxset | Premium Palladium Edition is where at least some of it resides.

When the transfer of all the analog cassettes to the digital realm is complete(target date: Sept. 2019), the tapes will be epoxied together to make a coffee table.

The Nil Cassette Archive Volume One | Box-less Boxset | Premium Palladium Edition--34 robust tracks--is modestly priced at $2.00.

about

Nil began making music in Amherst MA, early in 1998. They played roughly once per week until March, 2003, when 2 of the band members were destroyed by an exploding furnace. These are the tapes they made while they existed.
